One of the challenges this week was to have a look into UI patterns and trends and choose some that would be beneficial for our designs. Even though I have chosen to leave the visual design aspect for later on in my design it’s not a bad idea to have a little bit of the work already done - I always find it easier to continue work than to start it.

Simplification and brutalism

I am designing something simple that does one thing well and this is a trend that enhances that whilst also making things clear and accessible (Ahmed 2024)

Green design

This is the practice of choosing palettes that are better for the planet because they use less energy to display (Caposino 2024). It’s not something I was aware of at all but I like the opportunity of making the ethos into every aspect of the design. It makes the case for dark mode UI options which I will consider when developing the visual design.

Data visualisation

Being able to make data understandable to the user is a crucial communication skill (Caposino 2024). This will definitely be applicable in the gamification element I want to include in the app around informing the user how much energy has been saved by not throwing out the food, I want to make it digestible and relevant to the user.

Useful UI patterns

The UI patterns website has an overview of UI patterns that are widely used (Learning Loops ApS 2024), these are the ideas that jumped out at me that could be beneficial in my design:

a list of a few things that jumped out that I think I will use:
